The New Geopolitics of Research

The New Geopolitics of Research
28/10/2025
11 a.m.
Blue Cube Auditorium, City of Innovation
Building 8B - 3rd Floor. Universitat Politècnica de Valencia Cno. Vera s/n Valencia 46022

On October 28th at 11 a.m., the side event of the UPV Innovation Forum will be held in a hybrid format at the Polytechnic City of Innovation with the live podcast produced by El Orden Mundial. The session will continue with an elite round table in the national scientific field that will discuss the course of the geopolitics of research.

We are all seeing how the geopolitical situation is changing in the world. It came from before, with the rise of China, but in a year we have seen a crazy President Trump who is changing everything and we are returning to a dynamic of blocs that we thought was overcome. Research is also being affected. Today, Europe is more concerned about technological sovereignty than its lower rate of converting research into innovation. There is increasing concern about who we share knowledge with, and we are seeing more vetoes on relationships with researchers depending on which countries they are from. The demand for research in defense is visibly growing, an opaque and expensive sector almost by definition, far from the culture of knowledge dissemination of the academy and the involvement assumed by researchers to address social, environmental or business competitiveness challenges.

UPV Innovation understands that promoting public debate on this issue responds to its objective of fostering a culture of innovation. And asking what and for whom to research and innovate are questions that a university that wants to be useful to society has to consider.

The dynamics of this Side Event of the UPV Innovation Forum consists of two parts. On the one hand, a podcast recorded live from the series “No es el fin del Mundo”, produced by El Orden Mundial, a media outlet on geopolitics that has received the Ondas Award 2025; with this, UPV Innovation seeks a wide dissemination of the issue. On the other hand, an expert debate with scientific, political, business and geostrategic analysis leaders, which will help the UPV community to have a better informed criterion on the issue.
