Unique Infrastructures

The UPV provides companies and entities with a set of unique infrastructures that facilitate the development of research, innovation, and technological transfer projects under unique conditions. These facilities are designed to respond to experimental or validation needs that require a highly specialized environment.

Unique Infrastructures
Certain tests, processes, or technological developments can only be carried out in spaces with specific conditions. The UPV's unique infrastructures offer that unique environment for advanced experimentation.

The Universitat Politècnica de València has unique infrastructures ranging from large-scale laboratories and structural test benches to pilot plants, wind tunnels, simulation laboratories or experimentation spaces in real environments.

These facilities allow reproducing extreme conditions, validating prototypes, testing new materials or technologies and obtaining reliable data for decision making in R&D&I.

Its access is oriented to companies, technology centers, administrations and research organizations that seek a controlled and certified environment where to advance in the validation or demonstration of their technological developments.

Featured infrastructures

Explore this selection of unique scientific-technical infrastructures of the UPV, especially relevant for their capacity and specialization.

Micro/nanofabrication of circuits and photonic components

The UPV has a centralized microfabrication service with a 500m2 class 10,000 ISO-7 clean room facility for research and prototyping with semi-automated equipment for the characterization and processing of integrated and hybrid photonic circuits (silicon-silicon nitride with III-V materials).

Additionally, the Nanophotonica Technology Centre Institute is one of the three nodes of the Unique Scientific-Technical Infrastructure “Micronanofab” to which it contributes a 500 m2 clean room, divided into sections of class 10, 100 and 10,000, certified by TÜV in ISO-14644 for industrial nanofabrication of small series of photonic and microelectronic circuits, together with auxiliary laboratories for physical and optical characterization and for the complete encapsulation of optical and photonic devices.

Germplasm Bank of horticultural seeds

The Germplasm Bank of the University Institute for Conservation and Improvement of Valencian Agrodiversity (COMAV) of the Universitat Politècnica de València preserves a collection of approximately 13,000 entries of horticultural crops. Among the families with the largest number of preserved samples are the Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae, with more than 7,000 and 3,000 entries, respectively.

The mandate of the BG of COMAV is to conserve in due conditions, regenerate, characterize and promote the use of the collection of horticultural crops. A large part of the collection is of Spanish origin, with also a representative number of entries from various countries, especially from Central America and Latin America. The BG transfers the materials through the signing of the Standardized Material Transfer Agreement of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA).

Wind tunnel

The Professor Francisco Payri Wind Tunnel, of the Aerodynamics Research Service (SIA), has a test section of 2.8 m wide, 2.8 m high and 22 m long, with wide optical accesses, a maximum wind speed of 33 m / s and a minimum turbulent intensity of 0.1%. The SIA, as a support service for R&D of the Universitat Politècnica de València, offers aerodynamic testing services. Some examples of services that can be provided are:

  • Measurement of pressure distribution on vehicles or components.
  • Measurement of forces and moments on models.
  • Measurement of vibrations in structures due to interaction with the wind.
  • Characterization of noise emitted by propellers.
Hydrogen engine testing

The CMT Institute of the UPV has a hydrogen engine testing infrastructure single-cylinder (up to 65 Kw of power) and multi-cylinder (up to 460 kw of power), with capacity to test maximum hydrogen flow of 40kg/hr. The installation has a capacity of 270kg of hydrogen stored at 200 bar and is fully sensorized for mechanical and optical measurements and with ample capacity for computation, calculation and modeling.

Structural Elements Laboratory

The Institute of Science and Technology of Concrete has a laboratory for testing structural elements in building and engineering, with a test slab of 32×15 m² with anchors of 500 kN capacity per meter, three-dimensional reaction wall of 14 m height and with 20 actuators of 10 to 5000 kN, being able to combine solicitations in different directions. The installation is sensorized for deformation, load and displacement and allows real-scale construction tests.

Electron Microscopy Laboratory

The Electron Microscopy Service is a facility dependent on the Vice-Rectorate for Research that is equipped with scientific instrumentation related to the field of microscopy. Its responsibility is to make available to the research groups of the U.P.V. the equipment and experience of its staff to obtain the best possible results with the available techniques. Under certain conditions, it can also offer its support to other public institutions and private companies in the socioeconomic environment in which the University is framed.

Available applications:

  • Scanning electron microscopy
  • Transmission electron microscopy
  • Preparation of samples for the scanning microscope
  • Preparation of samples for the transmission microscope
  • Atomic force and tunnel effect microscopy
  • Digistar, ADT 3D, Astar
  • Micromechanical tests
  • High resolution transmission electron microscopy
  • Field emission scanning electron microscopy
  • Combined focused electron and ion microscopy
Radiation Laboratory

The Environmental Radioactivity Laboratory (LRA-UPV) is a laboratory that works in the area of radioactivity measurements and more specifically in low activity or environmental measurements. However, it is prepared to carry out measurements of more active samples taking advantage of the existence in the Radiation Service of a laboratory equipped to work with active samples and a new line of research related to radiological emergencies.

The LRA-UPV has the equipment necessary for a radioactivity laboratory: low background proportional counter for the quantification of alpha and beta emitters, SZn(Ag) counter for the measurement of alpha emitters, gamma spectrometers, alpha spectrometers, liquid scintillation equipment to measure low energy beta emitters and a thermoluminescence reader for the determination of the ambient dose.

The LRA-UPV performs tests on all types of environmental matrices: water, air, soil, sediments, vegetation and food. It currently participates in the environmental radiological monitoring programs of the C.N. de Cofrentes and is part of the network of Spanish university laboratories that provide technical support to article 35 of the EURATOM treaty. Likewise, and within the studies of natural radioactivity, it is carrying out the radiological impacts of several ceramic industries in the Valencian Community.

High Power Radiofrequency Laboratory ESA-VSC

The European High Power RF Laboratory of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the Valencian Space Consortium (VSC) (of which the UPV is a part) is specialized in breakdown effects in Radio Frequency (Multipactor, Corona and Power Handling) and in the study of Passive Intermodulation (PIM) for space technology.

The Laboratory, located at the Universitat Politècnica de València, has four class 10,000 clean rooms (ISO category 7) that have a total area of 400 m² useful. The facilities house eight vacuum chambers and several state-of-the-art systems for testing and research of high power RF effects in a wide frequency range ranging from 10 MHz to 39.5 GHz.
