Telecommunication and Multimedia Applications University Research Institute

The Institute of Telecommunications and Multimedia Applications (iTEAM) of the Universitat Politècnica de València, created in 2004 and supported as a University Institute in 2005, is today one of the largest academic centers in technology. With more than 200 professionals—including professors, researchers, technicians, and doctoral students—it develops R in areas such as photonics, antennas and microwaves, mobile and multimedia communications, signal processing, and digital systems.

The iTEAM combines scientific excellence and innovation with direct application to society. Its groups work in cutting-edge photonics (optical sensing, optical chips, radio over fiber), audio, image, and biomedical processing; design and characterization of antennas and microwaves; 5G/6G networks and mobile communications; as well as multimedia over IP and immersive reality, including holography and telepresence. Its facilities are equipped with high-level laboratories dedicated to 5G, microwaves, image/audio, and holographic systems.

iTEAM has executed more than a thousand competitive projects and several technological spin-offs have emerged from it (VLC PHOTONICS, CALSENS, IPRONICS, HYBPIC). It has obtained international awards such as the Best Paper IEEE ICC 2025. It collaborates with numerous companies, administrations, and groups to transfer disruptive solutions in sectors such as private telecommunications, health, education, entertainment, and industry. Its approach ranges from the creation of prototypes in photonics to immersive experiences in 5G, revolutionizing fields as diverse as training, rehabilitation, and environmental monitoring.
