EuroSakai 2010 Session Schedule
Leading educational institutions throughout the world choose Sakai to enable powerful teaching and learning and research collaboration. Depending on where you are in the world, Sakai might be called a Course Management System (CMS), a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) or Learning Management System (LMS). While Sakai is typically used for teaching and learning (similar to products like Blackboard and Moodle) we call it a Collaboration and Learning Environment (CLE) because it embraces uses beyond the classroom.
Flexible
- Sakai is an adaptable, interoperable, reliable, and scalable platform for learning and collaboration. Sakai’s roles and permission system is especially flexible and powerful.
- For coursework, Sakai provides features to supplement and enhance teaching and learning.
- For collaboration, Sakai has tools to help organize communication and collaborative work on campus and around the world.
- For portfolios, Sakai includes the robust Open Source Portfolio e-Portfolio system as a core part of the Sakai software.
- For seamless integration to library resources, the Sakaibrary tools link library resources to Sakai.
Powerful
Sakai leads the market in providing innovative features. When one organization creates a new capability that enhances learning or research, the full Sakai community benefits from the new development that occurs. This model keeps Sakai’s functionality on the forefront of the industry.
Open
Sakai is distributed as free and open source software under the Educational Community License .
Sakai’s open approach allows institutions to deploy, host and modify the software in whatever manner best supports institutions skills, needs and goals. Sakai’s open development process allows local enhancements to be incorporated into future versions of the software.
Sakai embraces both open source and open standards. We use open source software within our technology whenever possible and base as much work as we can on open standards. Sakai enables an open approach to support models allowing choices between institutional support, community support and commercial support, each with unique benefits and costs.
