Communication is at the heart of the human condition and is the foundation of our capacity to relate, transmit complex information and organise ourselves in society.
Advances in the field of information technologies and communications have magnified this capacity and have been one of the keys to the last cycle of economic expansion. Among all these new technologies, mobile phones have played a key role. With a global sales volume of some 1,3 billion terminals per year, and a penetration rate in society above 100%, mobile phones are now an essential part of our lives.
The mobile phone market is constantly evolving. The competition between manufacturers is fierce. The main brands are forced to launch new devices with higher performance and quality of service in very short product life cycles, which makes the pre-commercialisation testing process essential.
The tests of a new device comprise a wide array of tests that include carrying out a large number of voice and data calls along a predefined route, the collection of data from the mobile and the network, and the processing and visualisation of all this information to assess the smartphone’s features and suggest corrective actions.
As a result of the experience and knowledge gained in mobile communications networks and application development, the Institute of Telecommunications and Multimedia Applications (iTEAM) has collaborated with Motorola Spain since 1998 to develop applications to support the testing and improvement of its mobile devices.
iTEAM has developed three support applications for the testing phase within the framework of this collaboration: ADT -Automatic Drive Test (management and automation of the performance of a set of tests) WRG – Web Report Generator (web sharing of Motorola daily test results worldwide) and MoRe – Mobile Reports (obtaining performance indicators to analyse the mobile behaviour from the data collected in the tests).
