Computer Systems and Computation Department

Location: Vera Campus

DISCA researches and develops key technologies for more efficient, intelligent hardware, prepared for the challenges of the digital future.

The Department of Computer Systems and Computation (DISCA) researches and develops advanced hardware technologies to improve the performance and energy efficiency of computer systems. Its lines of work include the design of processors, accelerators, memories, and interconnection networks, as well as techniques for code autogeneration and embedded artificial intelligence; and its researchers address everything from the analysis of bottlenecks in parallel architectures to the design of hardware accelerators optimized for neural networks. With participation in European (such as DARE), national, and regional projects, the department has established itself as a benchmark in computer architecture and technological transfer applied to industry.

Parallel Architectures Group

The Parallel Architectures Group (GAP) combines theoretical creativity and practical precision to investigate interconnection networks in all types of systems: from supercomputers and clusters to network-on-chips of multi-core processors. A good part of the advances achieved by its team have been transferred to the industrial sector, collaborating with large manufacturers and contributing to the design of real high-performance systems, as well as to international initiatives such as the RED‑SEA project.

Computer Networks Group

Active since 2000, the Computer Networks Group explores network architecture, communications, and next-generation mobile systems. Its work focuses on designing AI and IoT infrastructures with applications in intelligent transport, citizen sensorization, and publication/subscription networks. In addition, it promotes the emergence of spin‑offs such as SensingTools, which uses digital twins integrating physical and social sensors to support decision-making in fields as diverse as smart cities and industrial management.

Several DISCA professors conduct their research in centers and institutes outside the department, such as the University Institute of Automation and Industrial Computing, the University Institute of Information and Communication Technologies, the Joint University Institute of Computer Technology, the University Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics, the Department of Textile and Paper Engineering, and the Joint University Institute of Research in Mechanical Engineering and Biomechanics
